Chapter Six

Ah. I bet you are wondering right now, aren’t you? How the fuck is she alive? Wasn’t she dead? How could no one have noticed this? It’s not like she just changed her face.

Good questions. Let me see if I can help you with them.

She was alive, thanks to my father. Well, barely. She was practically dead for about six months. By that I mean, her brain was barely responsive, comatose. She just had a really long dream as we waited for her to recover.

That brings the question of her identity. Surely, someone might be aware of it. That is true. A few people were. Everyone else didn’t give a shit. After all, there had been no crime committed that night. The news channels hadn’t picked up on anything. As far as anyone knew, she was just another person who had survived the cold outside. The doctors pronounced her condition as a result of an odd combination involving the cold and physical activity. Can you believe that? They actually made an official report saying that she was out there doing something in the cold, which caused her to suffer such injuries and put her into a coma. That’s it.

Several detectives and policemen stopped by for maybe, I don’t know, a few weeks? They asked about her. The doctors said that they weren’t sure when she would get out of the coma. Their words probably made a lot of people nervous. They probably hoped to be there the moment she woke up. Whatever fate awaited her after that, I couldn’t imagine, but it never came to that. You see, the doctors who had performed the initial assessments went on to confirm that her coma was long-term. I think he was under a lot of pressure from powerful people at that time and he just might have taken an educated guess. Or maybe said something to get everyone off his back. Whatever the reason was, he made the policemen and detectives stop paying the young woman a visit.

And so time went on. And on. Not everyone forgot about her. Some remembered. Those who knew her were there for her every day of her life in that room. They watched her closed eyes, yearning for her to simply open them again. They contemplated options. The doctors talked to them about pulling the plug. Well, just one doctor in particular. That fucker knew that he needed the consent form signed. Rather than directly approach them, he would drop more hopeless news about her condition on them, manipulating them into believing that their daughter was slowly slipping away from them. He would sprinkle bits of information about coma, relief, and how to make things easier for the patient. He would pretend to be their friend, sometimes even talking to them for long hours about the life of their daughter. He was a great listener, if only because he wanted them to listen to him in the end. His methods were deliberate. Not for a moment did he ever try to reveal a sense of urgency.
